Important Trash Collection Information

Since January 1, 2003, J.P. Mascaro & Sons has collected your trash and recyclables as the trash contractor for the City of Hazleton.

  • Recyclables are collected every week.
  • One bulk item may be put out each week.
  • Leaf waste is collected twice a year (see below).

Trash Collection
Household refuse is collected once a week. We start trash collection early, so get your trash to the curb the night before your collection day. Use plastic or metal trash cans or plastic trash bags. Please do not put out trash in paper bags, cardboard boxes or containers smaller than 20 gallons. These can cause litter!

Trash Collection Schedule
Monday (District #1) – All territory east of Wyoming Street and south of Broad Street including Laurel Hill Terrace and Hazleton Heights.

Tuesday (District #2) – All territory west of Wyoming Street and south of Diamond Avenue.

Wednesday (District #3) – All territory east of Wyoming Street and between Broad Street and Diamond Avenue and east of Carson Street and north of Diamond Avenue.

Thursday (District #4) – All territory north of Diamond Avenue between Carson and Locust Streets.

Friday (District #5) – All territory north of Diamond Avenue and west of Locust Street.

Holidays – Trash will not be collected on holidays, and collection will be one day late for the rest of that week.
For example, if the holiday falls on a Monday, the regular Monday pickup will be on Tuesday – Tuesday pickup will be on Wednesday – Wednesday pickup will be on Thursday – Thursday pickup will be on Friday – Friday pickup will be on Saturday.

Holidays with no pickup are: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day (July 4th), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Bulk Item Collection
Bulk Items are large items such as major appliances and furniture. Examples would be stoves, water heaters, washers, dryers, TVs, sofas, tables, Christmas trees, mattresses and box springs. A mattress and box spring set counts as one item. You may put out one bulk item per week.

There is no spring clean-up collection, since you may put out an item each week.

Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners & dehumidifiers contain Freon (CFCs) that by law must be removed before they can be disposed of. You MUST have the Freon removed by a refrigeration mechanic and a certification sticker put on before putting the item out for collection. Most appliance dealers and repair shops can do this. Many dealers will remove your old refrigerator when they deliver your new one. For safety, remove refrigerator and freezer doors before setting them out.

Leaf Waste Collection
Leaf waste is picked up twice a year, one in spring and once in fall.  Yard waste can be dropped off at the City garage on North Cedar Street from March through November. Leaf waste must be either bagged or placed in reusable containers. If bagged, leave top open so they are easier to empty. Leaf waste must not be combined with other types of yard waste (branches, hedge trimmings or garden debris).
