Rabo commented on the funds budgeted to hire part-time police officers. He said the City needs to ways to get more money to hire more part-time police officers. Rabo commented that this amount should be used for foot patrols only. He felt the part-time police officers would help alleviate the burden of having to transfer prisoners to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility. Rabo mentioned that there is overcrowding in the prison because of all of the “criminal illegals” in prison. It costs $1.8 million to house them there, and there are currently 1,500 in the County jail. Mope said part-time police officers would definitely help alleviate some of the overtime.
